Prüfung eins: anderes Gerät in denselben Port

Gerät abziehen, Rechner neu starten, dann wieder einstecken.

The drive is in, the folder flickers, nothing happens. Before anybody orders a new dock: four checks, five minutes. Most of the time only that one port is dead — and the device is not.

Check one: a different device in the same port

Put a second device into the same socket. If nothing works there either, the port is the fault. If something works there, the first device is the fault — and you have solved half of it in thirty seconds.

Check two: the same device in another port

Check the other way round. If the device runs perfectly in the other port, neither cable, drive nor laptop is broken — it is that one socket. That is worth writing down before somebody orders a replacement.

Check three: driver and restart

Unplug the device, restart the computer, plug it in again. Then look in the device manager: unknown device, yellow triangle, a disabled USB controller. A driver left hanging after an update looks exactly like that — and is fixed in a minute.

Check four: physical and power

Look from below: dust, crumbs, a bent plug inside. Not with force, not with a metal pin. If the laptop only runs with the mains adapter, pull the battery and wait two minutes — some ports come back only after that. Note the result in one sentence: port dead, device fine. The next person starts at minute five instead of minute one.

Sonucu tek cümlede not edin: yuva ölü, cihaz sağlam. Sıradaki kişi birinci dakika yerine beşinci dakikadan başlar.
