A slow laptop leads to the shop almost every time and to a diagnosis almost never. Yet three causes explain most complaints — and all three can be checked in one afternoon.

None of them starts with a purchase.

The machine is rarely old, it is loaded

A five-year-old model usually does office work better than the feeling suggests. What changes is the load: programs that join at startup, a disk close to its edge, a fan full of dust. Each one costs a little speed; together they feel like a new machine.

First: what starts on its own

The startup list shows what runs before anyone opened anything. Cloud sync, chats, updaters and tools someone needed once collect there. Check what is genuinely needed at power-on, switch off the rest — that is the single most effective step.

Second: free disk space

A full disk slows the whole system, not just saving files. Below roughly ten percent free, swapping, updates and temporary files get expensive. Clearing cache folders and the notes folder often beats any optimisation tool.

Third: heat

A dusty fan is silent and still audible in behaviour: the processor lowers its clock to protect itself, and that feels exactly like age. The fan exhaust should be unobstructed and the device should not sit on a soft surface. Cleaning costs little and explains a fair amount of recovered speed.

When the hardware is really done

The honest last check: if startup, disk and heat are clean and the machine still crawls under today's workload, the hardware is finished. That answer costs one afternoon — and it comes before a decision that carries you for years.

A new machine only settles the third check for certain. The first two move onto the new device unchanged.
