Was wirklich ins Backup gehört

There is only one backup question that counts: which file did you last restore from a backup? Whoever cannot answer it does not have a backup — they have a feeling.

For a small office, a usable plan takes ten minutes to explain. It needs no new software, just four decisions.

The rule in one sentence

Three copies, two different media, one of them offsite. In practice that usually means: the working copy, a local image with version history, and one copy in the cloud. Nothing more is needed at this point.

What actually goes into the backup

A list everyone agrees on: accounting, contracts, customer data, the drive with the photos, the overview file nobody can work without. Program files do not belong in a backup — you reinstall those. The chaos on several people's desktops does belong in it, messy or not: that is usually where the missing things live.

Automatic — or it will not happen

A backup that someone has to remember is not a backup. A daily time, automatic, no action required. A cloud folder with version history or a NAS plus cloud — either works. The only thing that matters is that nobody has to press a button.

The test that counts

Once a quarter: restore one file and one whole folder — and time it. The test shows two things: whether it works, and how long it takes when the office really needs something. Plus one question: who owns the plan? One name, not "we".

Cloud storage for a small office costs less than one day of not being able to work. The proof of a backup is its restore.
